Mentzer Index
The Mentzer index is a calculation, developed by William C. Mentzer, used to help differentiate between iron deficiency anemia (IDA) and beta-thalassemia trait. It is calculated by dividing a patient's Mean Corpuscular Volume (MCV) by their Red Blood Cell (RBC) count. A value less than 13 suggests thalassemia, while a value greater than 13 suggests iron deficiency anemia.
