Lactate
Lactate (lactic acid) is a chemical produced by your cells when they break down glucose (sugar) for energy, particularly when oxygen is insufficient for full aerobic metabolism. It's a natural byproduct of intense exercise but can also indicate serious medical conditions like lactic acidosis, where high levels may be a sign of poor oxygen supply or disrupted cellular energy production. While traditionally linked to fatigue, lactate is increasingly recognized as a valuable fuel source for other organs, such as the heart and brain, and a signaling molecule involved in processes like wound healing and bone development.
