Serum Total Iron
Serum total iron measures the amount of iron circulating in the blood, primarily bound to transferrin, a protein that transports iron throughout the body. Normal ranges for serum iron vary by lab, but typically fall between 75–150 mcg/dL for men and 60–140 mcg/dL for women. Abnormally high levels can indicate iron poisoning or liver disease, while low levels may suggest iron deficiency anemia, which is often caused by insufficient dietary iron or blood loss.
