GAD 65 (Glutamic Acid Decarboxylase) Antibodies
GAD65 antibodies are proteins produced by the immune system that attack the glutamic acid decarboxylase 65 (GAD65) enzyme, a key component in producing the neurotransmitter GABA. While they are primarily markers for autoimmune conditions like Type 1 Diabetes, they also indicate various central nervous system (CNS) disorders, including Stiff-Person Syndrome, autoimmune epilepsy, and limbic encephalitis. The presence of high titers of these antibodies, particularly in the cerebrospinal fluid, may suggest a neurological disorder rather than a non-neurological autoimmune disease.
