AST (SGOT)
AST, or Aspartate Aminotransferase, is an enzyme also known as SGOT, which is an abbreviation for Serum Glutamic-Oxaloacetic Transaminase. Both tests measure the same enzyme level in the blood, which, when elevated, can indicate damage to organs like the liver, heart, or muscles. Elevated AST/SGOT levels are often a sign of inflammation or damage to these cells, and the test is frequently used as part of a liver function panel to assess overall health.
