Phospholipid Antibody Profile (APA)
A Phospholipid Antibody Profile (APA), or Antiphospholipid Antibody (APA) Test, is a blood test that screens for the presence of antiphospholipid antibodies (APAs). These antibodies are produced by the immune system, but instead of fighting external pathogens, they mistakenly target the body's own phospholipids, which are essential components of cell membranes. The presence of significant levels of APAs can interfere with normal blood clotting processes, leading to an increased risk of blood clots (thrombosis). This testing is important for diagnosing conditions linked to APAs, such as recurrent miscarriages, other pregnancy complications, and thrombotic events.
