NMO-Neuromyelitis Optica Antibodies, Serum
The "NMO-Neuromyelitis Optica Antibodies, Serum" test detects autoantibodies, specifically NMO-IgG (also known as AQP4-IgG), in a patient's blood serum to help diagnose Neuromyelitis Optica Spectrum Disorder (NMOSD), an autoimmune condition affecting the spinal cord and optic nerves. This test targets aquaporin-4 (AQP4) channels, which are important for water balance in the central nervous system and are attacked by these antibodies. A positive result indicates the presence of these NMO-specific antibodies, while a negative result suggests that either NMOSD is unlikely or further testing, such as with a spinal fluid (CSF) sample, may be necessary for confirmation.
