Unsaturated Iron Binding Capacity (UIBC)
Unsaturated Iron-Binding Capacity (UIBC) measures the available, unused binding sites on the transferrin protein in the blood to hold iron. It's a key component of a Total Iron-Binding Capacity (TIBC) test that helps diagnose iron deficiency, where UIBC is high because there's not enough iron to saturate the available transferrin, or iron overload, where UIBC is low due to excessive circulating iron.
