Immature platelet fraction (IPF)
The immature platelet fraction (IPF) is the percentage of newly released, immature platelets (reticulated platelets) in the blood. It's a measure of platelet production (thrombopoiesis) and reflects the bone marrow's ability to generate platelets. An increased IPF indicates the bone marrow is actively producing and releasing platelets in response to platelet destruction, while a decreased IPF suggests reduced platelet production, as seen in bone marrow failure. This makes IPF useful for diagnosing the cause of thrombocytopenia (low platelet count), predicting platelet recovery after treatments like chemotherapy, and in some cases, assessing disease progression.
